Car accident insurance is important for a number of reasons. It safeguards you and your family against unexpected challenges. It provides financial security and recovery following a car accident.

In a perfect world, insurance companies would always treat you fairly. But that is not the case. There is a reason Kentucky’s legislature had to pass a law called the Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Act years ago. Profit drives insurance companies. And for some companies, that is the only driving factor. So if you find yourself in a conflict with an insurance company, don’t be surprised. Did you ever notice that the tallest buildings in most cities have insurance company names on them?

The American Association of Justice has listed the top 10 worst insurers for consumers. This detailed report identifies how these insurance companies raise premiums, deny claims, and refuse insurance to those who need it most.

According to the AAJ report, the top ten worst insurance companies in order are:

1. Allstate

2. Unum

3. AIG

4. State Farm

5. Conseco

6. Well Point

7. Farmers

8. UnitedHealth

9. Torchmark Liberty Mutual

10. Liberty Manual

The results were based on a comprehensive investigation of thousands of court documents, SEC and FBI records, state insurance department investigations and complaints, news accounts, and the testimony and depositions of former insurance agents and adjusters.

The AAJ report also noted that some companies have discovered that they can make more money by simply paying out less. The report noted that “there is no greater poster child for insurance industry greed than Allstate.”

Protecting yourself against insurance companies

The report reveals some of the most egregious tactics employed by the insurance industry to increase profits. While not every denied insurance claim in Kentucky is a result of bad faith or a violation of Kentucky law, bad faith tactics are common place.

If you think an insurance company is not treating you fairly, is acting in bad faith, or you think you are not being compensated the amount you deserve, you should consult with an experienced Kentucky car accident lawyer to protect you and your family.
