Inspections show veterans often subjected to nursing neglect

Those who have made sacrifices to serve their country are entitled to the best care possible as they age. Unfortunately, it appears that in many federal nursing homes dedicated to caring for these veterans, residents are being subjected to nursing home neglect. Kentucky residents who are concerned about the care their loved ones are receiving can seek more information related to the care these facilities provide.

According to an in-depth investigation by two renowned newspapers and the reports of whistleblowers, the care that veterans are subjected to in the Department of Veterans Affairs-operated homes is of poorer quality than that provided in many private nursing homes. Reports have included examples of residents lacking fresh water by their bedsides, bedpans that are not emptied and residents going hours without anyone checking on their needs. Some residents have reportedly waited for hours in soiled linens while others are left suffering in pain without any medications.

Other reports included the story of a veteran who managed to wander away from a supposedly secure facility and subsequently being reported dead after having never been found. Another required hospitalization after suffering from malnutrition, bed sores and septic shock while a patient in a VA nursing home. The VA purportedly maintained a secret ratings list that shows that dozens of facilities scored poorly in inspections.

Several veterans' rights groups are now demanding action in order to improve the care that these individuals receive from nursing facilities. According to its records, out of the 133 homes that the agency operates, approximately 71 percent received poor scores in relation to the quality of care that veterans receive. Any time Kentucky residents fear that a loved one is suffering from nursing home neglect or abuse, they are entitled to seek justice for the pain and monetary losses that resulted. An experienced attorney can provide guidance in how to proceed in seeking justice through the civil courts.
