Why summer means more risks on the road

We all look forward to the longer days filled with more sun, but there’s a downside to the warm season.

It turns out summer is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. Here are a few factors that cause accident risks to rise with the temperature:

Watch for tourists

Locals understand trouble spots on the road, but tourists may not know about the troublesome corner or an extra-large pothole. Those visiting Lexington from elsewhere will be unfamiliar with their surroundings.

Furthermore, as they head out to visit Ashland or the Kentucky Horse Park, they’ll likely be focused on their itinerary or spotting a good place to eat. All of this adds up to careless driving habits and unsafe behaviors.

School’s out for summer

Teenagers love to travel in packs, and summer is the perfect opportunity for them to take trips and explore. There’s no school in session, so many teenagers will spend their time at work or just hanging out.

Our roads feature more teens in the summer than at any other time of year. Teenagers are inexperienced behind the wheel, which is already a risk. Add other teens in the car and you have a recipe for distraction.

Road construction season

Summer means orange traffic cones and lots of detours. Road construction spikes in the warmer months and that means new routes for even the most seasoned Lexington native. Impatient drivers may speed through road construction areas or drive aggressively around obstacles, which can be a danger in itself.

Furthermore, distracted drivers may not look up from their phones to even notice a lane closure or detour.

Being ready just in case

Summer is a great time for road trips. It’s important to keep in mind how many risks are still on the road even though the weather is no longer a factor.

If you’re in an accident with a careless or distracted driver, talking to an attorney can be helpful in recovering some of the damages you’ve suffered.
