Kentucky looks to redesign site of multiple semi truck accidents

The nation's highways are often congested and over-crowded, especially around larger, metropolitan areas that are busy commerce hubs. While it is imperative that goods are received in a timely fashion, these freeways are often the scene of a deadly semi truck crash due to poor roadway design. Kentucky officials received approval from the Federal Highway Administration to submit plans for a redesign of a dangerous interstate junction.

In 2016, a portion of I-64, I-65 and I-71 were rebuilt as part of an Ohio River project. The junction has since been the scene of multiple serious big rig crashes. During an 8-week stretch, there were approximately eight crashes involving large trucks. The wrecks led to road closures that lasted several hours, thereby creating more traffic problems and the potential for additional accidents.

One section of the targeted area was once called "dead man's curve" and is now referred to as Spaghetti Junction. Officials stated that tentative plans for the ramp area include new overhead signs, signage on the roads' surfaces and improved lane markers to alert drivers earlier to the upcoming changes in lane width. Purportedly, the Federal Highway Administration has requested that Kentucky officials consider additional measures, though further details were not provided.

The Transportation Department will also take an in-depth look at other areas surrounding the junction in an effort to improve the safety of travelers and reduce the chances of a dangerous semi truck wreck. Regardless, it is likely that serious crashes will continue to take a toll on the lives of victims. If there is evidence that a serious crash was the result of negligence on the part of another party, victims may have grounds for pursuing recovery of their documented financial losses through a personal injury civil suit.
